A YEARLY DISAPPEARING ACT GIVE THIS BEACH ITS NAME

Magic Sands, or officially La’aloa Beach, is a popular white-sand beach in Kailua-Kona. It has come to be known as Magic Sands, or sometimes Disappearing Sands, because several times a year the sand gets washed out in storms, exposing the lava rock underneath. The sand gradually comes back, returning the beach back to the picturesque self.

This is known as the best spot for boogie boarding on the Island. Those who are inexperienced will want to exercise caution though, as there is a strong surf break on the shore. There is a small rocky cove South of the beach that is a popular spot for scuba diving in calm conditions.

There are several archaeological sites in the area. You’ll find the ruins of an Ancient Hawaiian temple (haukalua Heiau) to the South of the beach.

DIRECTIONS & GENERAL INFORMATION

To reach Magic Sands Beach drive about 12 miles South past the airport on Hwy 19/11. Turn right on La’aloa Avenue (about 4 miles past the Safeway) and continue for 1 mile. Turn right on Ali’i Dr. The beach will be on your left 0.2 miles up Ali’i Dr. The entrance to the parking lot is on the left at the South end of the beach just past the Kona Sugar Shack. The beach has restrooms, showers, picnic tables and lifeguard on duty.
